Redwood City Cool Campaign - Fall '08

Piloting the Cool Community Campaign on a city-wide basis has added visibility to the City’s overall efforts, introduced me to community members interested in environmental issues and been effective in encouraging a small number of people to take action at home. Typically, however, a Cool Community Campaign is organized by a small team of volunteers who are affiliated with a specific organization such as a church, synagogue, school or business. Using a team to implement the campaign, the intimacy of a smaller group affiliation, and increased opportunities for face to face interaction, leads to greater action on the part of participants

Acterra is currently considering reorganizing the challenges over an October to April timeline. Challenges will be stepped down over the holidays and the Campaign will officially end on Earth Day. In anticipation of this new timeline, we would like to create a “campaign within a campaign” approach for fall of 08. This would include identifying 3-5 volunteers who would be willing to spearhead the program with their affiliated group. Acterra and I would support these volunteers and their teams and all participants would be driven to our common website. We would create additional momentum by looking for opportunities to announce and publicize the program throughout the City with banners, e-newsletters, etc., as many of you have suggested. Smaller groups will be encouraged to host meetings or events for their organization and everyone will be included in an end of campaign, city-wide celebration.

What do you think?
What is your immediate reaction to the idea of a “campaign within a campaign” approach?
What should we take into consideration if we reorganize the campaign on an October to April timeline?
Would you consider spearheading a Cool Community Campaign with a group you are affiliated with (school, faith organization, business, book club, other)
Do you find this valuable?
